EARLY LIFE

EARLY LIFE

From studies of molecules and microscopic sea forms.

pewter on board

£900.00
From studying molecules and microscopic animals from the sea and various planktons, I have evolved these forms, which as a group form a wall hanging. I have work on aspects of the sea for twenty years, remembering vivid experiences of when I was sailing. I work by discerning the opportunities offered by chance effects. Tonal areas are made by chemicals while details are scribed into the metal and some areas, polished. Sense of pattern is prominent in the evolution of these natural designs and to capture the pulsing actions and movement of these live creatures I apply coloured metals.
FLUIDITY SERIES

FLUIDITY SERIES

This wall series of three pewter panels mounted on board, deals with movement of water or sea and micro-organisms such as plankton - the rhythms and flow of the fluid and suspended particles. It makes a wall installation that catches the light from different directions and has subtle tonal depths and colour.

DARK SEA RESCUE

DARK SEA RESCUE

The sculpture, ambiguous as it is, resembles a planked boat, with caulking in the seams. Rescued from the woodland, I have treated this oak tree to make a velvety texture, expressing the subtle contours of the surface and the movement of the sea at night. Pewter adds glimpses of the crests of waves and trails of spume.
This is a solemn interpretation in remembrance of many desperate journeys from North Africa to Europe, especially the tragedy off Lampedusa in October 2013 when over 300 economic migrants perished - http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/mar/22/lampedusa-boat-tragedy-migrants-africa

Cedar wood

This modular floor sculpture is of this time, history in the making – resembling the sea, made of cedar wood from the local Tamar Valley and scorched to resemble dirt/blackness and something ‘dark’, a threat at this time… 'Oil floats on troubled waters' whilst modular format is representative of the age of industrialisation and mass production. This references oil spills at sea and the resultant consequences, which are yet to be totally felt or understood, especially the Deepwater Horizon incident in late April 2010 - http://ocean.si.edu/ocean-news/carthe-drifters-where-does-oil-go-when-it-spilled

LIFE

Commissioned for Treliske Hospital organ donation dept.. ‘Life’ is a wall sculpture of formed pewter sheet.
Light animates the surfaces as you pass by the contours.
The concept is abstract but is reminiscent of many natural things - whale, fish, leaf, ribs, plankton – it’s an organic form, which interprets the ‘life’ force. The Ocean being where life first developed.

‘Life’ is a wall sculpture of formed pewter sheet. Each strip is sculpted with a progression, which develops through the relief to create a sense of time passing. Light animates the surfaces as you pass by the contours. The concept is abstract but is reminiscent of many natural things - whale, fish, leaf, ribs, plankton – it’s an organic form, which interprets the ‘life’ force. The Ocean is where life first developed. There are two veins with a bridge between them and these meet at a point where the line of force changes, increasing in emphasis and rising into a blossoming, flowering form. This is similar to a lotus flower or a bud opening, suggesting new growth and inspiring an uplifting feeling. The whole shape also suggests a computer-generated fractal, bringing it into the 21st century. From Scotland to India this paisley-like pattern can be seen around the world but there is no cultural preference.

DEEP REACH

Wall sculpture – a conceptual narrative interpreted from observations of the powerful river current. As water flows into the estuary it drags on the riverbed and meeting an obstacle, it turns and wavelets form. Wall installation of five panels on board – abstracted, nature. Title refers to the interrelated movement of flocks of birds or schools of fish, and synchronicity found in the movement of creatures in the natural world – particularly a reference to the spectacular view of flocks of starlings wheeling about during autumn in preparation to roost. Each bird moves in relation to another forming a massive flux of activity, worked with patination and rich, colourful metal powders.

This piece is about the elements at sea - when in a storm, the tops of waves are blown horizontally making the atmosphere saturated with spray. This is a wall sculpture made of pewter on plaster and mounted on painted board. Light reflects off the surface of the pewter metal, utilising its subtle material properties and resembling the fragility and ephemeral nature of the natural world. Inspiration comes from the artist's experiences when sailing, which she reinterprets with a sophisticated, semi-abstracted character. She captures the essence of her memories and refines them to create a 'less is more', minimalist aesthetic which is in keeping with contemporary stylish interior design.
