DARK SEA RESCUE
The sculpture, ambiguous as it is, resembles a planked boat, with caulking in the seams. Rescued from the woodland, I have treated this oak tree to make a velvety texture, expressing the subtle contours of the surface and the movement of the sea at night. Pewter adds glimpses of the crests of waves and trails of spume.
This is a solemn interpretation in remembrance of many desperate journeys from North Africa to Europe, especially the tragedy off Lampedusa in October 2013 when over 300 economic migrants perished - http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/mar/22/lampedusa-boat-tragedy-migrants-africa
